Jacob Zuma, South Africa’s ex-president announced his refusal to serve his 15-months prison sentence.
The 79- year old veteran who ruled South Africa between 2009 and 2018 was sentenced on the 29th of June to 15 months in jail for contempt of court after he failed to appear before the state commission and give evidence in a corruption inquiry. On Friday 2nd of July, Zuma filed an appeal where he asked the court to annul its decision calling the sentence he received “cruel and degrading.”
Zuma is separately facing 16 charges of fraud, corruption, and racketeering relating to a 1999 purchase of fighter jets, patrol boats, and military gear from five European arms firms for 30 billion rands, then the equivalent of nearly $5bn.
“This kind of recalcitrance and defiance is unlawful and will be punished,” said Judge Sisi Khampepe.
