Botswana’s President Mokgweetsi Masisi and his Malawian counterpart, President Lazarus Chakwera on recently held talks on numerous issues of mutual interest, including cooperation and deepening of bilateral relations. At the Kamuzu Palace in the Malawian capital Lilongwe where President Masisi visited, both discussed ways in which their countries could be mutually beneficial towards growth.
“We have a lot to learn from Botswana: they are already a middle-income country and we want to learn lessons from them so that we, too, through their example and through our patient endurance, can truly serve Malawians much better,” said President Chakwera.
On the other hand, Masisi expressed interest in enhancing collaboration in the areas of fishing and education to help improve the two countries’ economies through science, technology, innovation, and digitization. He offered Malawi “the opportunity to take up the unutilized portion of Botswana’s) super productive fisheries hatcheries unit at Letsibogo Dam” and that in exchange, Malawi “should teach Botswana fishing Chambo,” Malawi’s treasured fish species, “and some other breeds in stock.”
Masisi also used the opportunity to solicit support for Botswana’s candidate Elias Magosi for the position of executive secretary of the Southern African Development Community (SADC), to which Botswana leader gave his assured support of Malawi’s ascendancy to the SADC Chairmanship saying Botswana wholeheartedly hopes to see Malawi at the helm.
