In a new turn of events, South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir has struck a deal with former foe Riek Machar that will pave the way for their rival armed forces to merge.
The country is hopeful that this peace process can shake off years of drift and bickering and result in the creation of a unified armed forces command, a key component of the 2018 truce agreement.
The deal will help “to create one unified security sector that will be dedicated to the people of South Sudan rather than to a political party or political group”, said Martin Elia Lomuro, the Minister of Cabinet Affairs.
